In honor of Women’s History Month, Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church is partnering with the League of Women Voters of the Space Coast to offer a presentation by Rev. David E. Bryant, Sr., on civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer from 7 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, March. 23, on Facebook Live.

We can't talk about voting rights without mentioning Fannie Lou Hamer. Born in 1917, Hamer was a sharecropper in rural Mississippi who didn’t even know she had the right to vote until she was 44 years old. She quickly became a prominent voice in the civil rights and voting rights movements. Hamer led voter registration drives across the country and co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party in 1964. In that year, Hamer helped organize Freedom Summer to help with Black voter registration in the South.

Hamer lost her job and continually risked her life because of her activism, but she remained a tireless advocate until her death in 1977. Now, almost half a century later, it’s important to remember Hamer and her fight to secure the right to vote for herself and others—a fundamental right of all citizens, but one too easily thwarted by voter suppression tactics.

The Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, located at 213 Stone Street in Cocoa, is the second oldest predominantly African American Missionary Baptist Church established on the east coast of Florida. The Church faithfully proclaims the gospel of Jesus Christ with the mission of building families & communities through God’s holy word.

“O’ magnify the LORD with me and let us exalt his name together.”  ~Psalms 34:3

The Church began in 1886. On November 17, 2011, Rev. David E. Bryant, Sr. was elected the 11th pastor of the Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and was installed into his position on January 9, 2012.

The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
