The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast Education Committee Hosts Presentation by BPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins on the Proposed Property Tax Increase to Fund Public Schools

The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast (LWVSC) Education Committee is hosting a presentation by Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins on a proposed property tax increase to fund our public schools that is on the November 8 ballot. The event is from 6 pm to 7 pm on Monday, October 3, 2022, on Zoom and is free and open to the public. To register, go to www.lwv-spacecoast.org.

If approved by voters on November 8, the ad valorem millage resolution would increase property taxes in Brevard County by 1.0 mill for four years. That means property owners in Brevard would pay $1 more per $1,000 of assessed value of property for the next four years until the tax increase expires. An owner of a property worth $200,000 would pay $200 more per year, though Florida residents would pay less due to tax deductions. The school district would use the funds to cover shortfalls in its budget, especially in the ability to pay competitive salaries for teachers and staff, but also for student programs and technical training.

The League of Women Voters of the Space Coast is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
